WHAT ARE HUMAN RIGHTS? 3 What human rights are covered in the UDHR?
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is probably the most famous document on the protection of human rights in the world. You can read the full list of human rights covered by the UDHR on page 22 and learn more about its history in the next chapter.
The UDHR is important because it covers every human being on Earth, not just EU or Irish citizens. It lists the rights that every human should enjoy in order to meet their basic needs and live with human dignity. The United Nations passed the UDHR and monitors whether countries keep to these rules.
However, the UDHR is much harder to enforce than the rights in the Irish Constitution or the ECHR. This is because the United Nations does not have the power to force countries to protect the rights described in the document.
