WHAT DOES DEMOCRACY MEAN TO YOU? 23 REFLECT ON YOUR LEARNING UNDERSTAND
1. What is the earliest recorded written example of people having a democratic say in the decisions that affect them?
2. Give three examples of the kinds of decisions students can have a say on through student councils.
3. What is Comhairle na nÓg? 4. What does ISSU stand for and what does the organisation do? 5. How might starting a club or society help promote a democratic voice for students?
DISCUSS
Have a short discussion (5–10 minutes) in pairs or groups on whether the student council in your school is currently working as a democratic voice for students. If your school does not have a student council, discuss whether it would be worth setting one up and how you would go about it.
Listen to each other carefully and note down any good points that you had not considered.
Report back to your teacher and the class on what you discussed and whether you mostly agreed or disagreed, stating why.
