A Kerry welcome for Ireland’s
newest citizens Almost 3,500 new citizens emerged from Killarney convention centre on an emotional but happy day
By Sinead Kelleher
It was a quiet and simple ceremony, but one that was hugely emotive; 3,500 people became new Irish citizens in the INEC in Killarney on Monday.
Natalia Makowska from Killarney and Alisia Munya Dogan from Tralee were among the thousands who became Irish citizens at the first ever citizenship ceremony to be held in Killarney on Monday.
Approximately 3,500 people from 120 countries were given Irish citizenship at the ceremony, and they travelled from all over Ireland to receive their new passports.
The majority being conferred with Irish citizenship were from Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom, with many more from India, Nigeria and Pakistan.
All have made Ireland their home; many of them have made Kerry their home. The Minister for Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan TD and the Minister of State with special responsibility for Equality, Immigration and Integration David Stanton TD attended the ceremony on Monday and congratulated the new Irish citizens.
