Stress occurs when negative events happen in our lives. There are very rare events like earthquakes that obviously cause distress to huge numbers of people. Less rare, and likely to happen to everyone at certain points, are major life events. For example, the death of a relative, or even happy events, such as the birth of a baby, can cause stress. Then there are the daily problems we all experience, such as meeting deadlines or making decisions. Dealing with difficult people also comes under this category. And finally, there is ambient stress which is caused by things like pollution, noisy environments or crowded places.
There are many ways to reduce stress. These range from physical activities such as jogging or yoga, to mental activities like writing problems down or being able to concentrate. Social activities are also important, for example, a simple activity such as having a conversation with a friend can help us to forget our problems and relax.
