‘Using social media is bad for your studies and bad for your real-world social life.’ Those are two claims in an article that I read yesterday. But are they true? Well, like most people, I started using social media in my teens. Unfortunately, I found it so much easier to check my timeline, chat online or watch a funny video than to study for an hour! Too often, I wasted time instead of working. The effect on my grades was dreadful!

So when I left school, I actually closed all my social media accounts and put my energy into ‘real life’. Sadly, after six months, I found I was losing touch with old friends and missing out on their news and events.

Clearly, there are massive real-world disadvantages if you ignore social media. When I opened my accounts again, I taught myself to control the time I spent online. In my view, that’s what we all need to do.

Of course, using social media isn’t only about building great friendships, making useful contacts, getting news at the speed of light, and so on. There are almost as many dangers and disadvantages, too, but it seems to me that’s true of all social activities. In my view, there’s no point in avoiding social media. Hopefully, we can learn to make use of its fantastic advantages and avoid the negative aspects.
