The Prisoner’s Dilemma 1


Follow the instructions and play the game. • Your objective is to get the best result for your team. • There are two teams, A and B, who play six rounds of the game. • Each team chooses one person to be a facilitator to record their team’s decisions and scores. The facilitator completes the table on page 183.


• Before each round the two teams have a three-minute discussion to agree the team strategy. • During each round there is no communication between the two teams. • At the end of each round the teams choose to confess or stay silent.


Step 1 Play three rounds. The team facilitator for each team announces the decision for each round and records decisions and scores.


Step 2 After the third round, hold a short negotiation between the two teams via team representatives. The idea of the negotiation is to improve the outcomes of the following games by reducing the number of years each player is sentenced to.


Step 3 Play three more rounds.


2 Discuss the questions about how you played the game.


a What kind of strategies did different people in your team want to use during the game? b Did you behave differently in the first three rounds compared to the second three rounds? In what ways? c What did you learn about yourself, your team members and the opposing team? d Did your attitude change between wanting to win and wanting to cooperate at any point? If yes, when and why?


e What difference did the negotiation between the two teams make?
