POLO CAMP
EXPERIENCE by Leonie Hay
As soon as we arrived at the Polo Camp we were greeted by the smiling faces of all the polo and yard staff. Firstly, we were introduced to each other and by the end we all became close friends. After we’d been acquainted we headed over to the horses to get an inside on what it is like working at the stables: by mucking out and grooming the horses. It was a really fun morning activity and was followed by a short food break before going for our morning ride.
We started out by taking the horses for a canter along the track and learnt the proper polo rein grip and how to hold the stick properly. After that we rode onto the stick and ball field where we did a couple of canter circles to practice our technique before doing a few stick and ball drills.
The morning activity was then followed by a Lunch break where we could either get Paninis from the bar or eat our packed Lunch brought from home. After the midday break, the 4 of us came up with some fun games such as getting into teams and trying to see which team could get the ball to the other side of the pitch using the least hits.
Once we’d had time to digest our Lunch, we went to tack up the horses for the afternoon ride where we either went to the park for a hack and a game of canter tag or we rode to the stick and ball field for some drills and small (but highly competitive) chukkas with Charlie as the ref. Finally after a

very eventful and productive day we went home eagerly awaiting the next day!
Even though the camp was only 4 days it was a great introduction to polo and a great chance to start lasting friendships!
