LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN Nicholas Colquhoun-Denvers
In 1898 Neville Chamberlain’s brother wrote in a speech “I think that you will all agree that we are living in the most interesting of times.” Some 120 years later I could not think of a better way to phrase it! What with Brexit looming, a `serial tweeter’ in the White House and the Home Office doing their best to dismember our beloved sport it certainly has been an `interesting winter of discontent’!
We have spent the winter months battling the new Home Office Regulations on immigration which will, in their current form, have a profound effect on low goal polo and, over time, certainly have an effect on the higher levels of the sport. HPC is proud that many of the High Goal Patrons such as Bryan Morrison, Anthony Embericos, Ali Albwardy and Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha all started their journey into the English polo scene at our Club. Without Clubs such as ours one wonders where players who aspire to the High Goal will start!
That said I cannot think of any nation on this planet better equipped to take up such a challenge and overcome it. A nation who have faced so many trials and adversities in their long and illustrious history and yet their resilience remains undiminished and undimmed. Thus I have the utmost confidence that we as a Club are probably better placed and in a strong financial position to be able to weather the storm and find new ways to turn these changes to the advantage of our club and our sport. Will Healy has done a great job of
building a new team to support our players and their ponies and we are looking forward to a full season of polo and events.
An abiding sadness this winter was the untimely passing of Al Wyatt who was not just a friend and player at the Club but he was the epitome of all that was good in an amateur polo player and Club member. He had served for years on the General Committee and his passion for his ponies, the sport and the Club will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved him. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Liz, Alex and the family.
Finally I would like to thank our Vice-President Colonel Geoffrey Godbold and his team on the Working Group for all the time and effort they devoted to producing a report to be considered by the General Committee on the future structure of the Club. This will now be the basis of further discussions and consultations as to its implementation and in what form.
May I, as always, thank you all for your continuing support of our very special Club and wish you a fun, enjoyable and safe season.
