POEM BY LOUISA FARLEY A fine day for polo, the sun is shining bright,
but as the players take the field, they all are wearing white.
Alas the first bell goes, the first chukka has begun, but before any time at all, a girth has come undone. They carry on all in white and it's very hard to tell,
which team is which on the ground, "Who is it that fell?"
They change a horse and score a goal, but instead of cheers, a groan, for the goal he scored on the grey, was actually his own .
One team now wears dark red bibs and the second chukka goes, they score a goal it's one to one, but who scored no one knows.
For the bib he has is inside out, they pause now on the pitch, for one in red has fallen off, and with a spectator now they switch.
He didn't shout "getting off" as he flew off the ponies ears, "I haven't seen a game like this in all my 30 years."
Friends on the ground in ride offs and wails heard miles around, what started as a friendly game, turns ugly on the ground.
Amongst the wails of passion and many, many fouls, the crowd cannot look away, but only wince and scowl.
And as the crowd comes in at half, the divets they stomp in, no one knows what to say, or how even to begin.
And if you can believe it so third chukka - more awry! Two more off, a T-bone and tensions running high.
So high in fact the whistle, that the referee would blow, hardly has a rest at all, and a yellow card does show.
The score 2-2, a broken stick, a pony rears and then, the team that had the dark red bibs, has changed their tops, again.
The whistle blowing, the shouting, is all that you can hear, except for dear Oreja, who only has one ear.
Penalty after penalty and 30 yard goals missed, arguments with the ref carry on to persist.
Last chukka now a roller coaster, of fouls and crossing lines, it's 2-3 to the red team, but white not far behind.
Two goals in quick succession, the white team gallops past, it's 4-3 for the white and time is ticking fast.
Final moments approaching now, the teams both shout and fight, for another penalty for the red, means they'll play into the night.
Though finally the last bell goes, the end of quite a match, for the polo at Ham Polo Club is always up to scratch.
