The first off-the-field play was scheduled for the same evening, with a welcome dinner in the Newport harbour district. Seafood hardly gets better than at the Newport sea shore.

The evening offered a perfect opportunity to get to know all the Newport people behind the close friendship of our two clubs, centring around Will and Lorrie Crisp and Dan and Agnes Keating. It was also a great opportunity to hear a lot of great stories of previous tours (better told than written!!). After a cloudy Thursday the sunshine was back over Rhode Island on Friday morning, just in time to bring out all the toys: From Tennis matches at the Hall of Fame, to America’s Cup yacht sailing in the bay, helicopter tours along the coast and surfing the waves of the Atlantic ocean, or the Great Mansion Tour for those in need to reduce their adrenalin! The day provided something for everyone and was greatly enjoyed by all team members.

The yacht sailing in the afternoon served as the ultimate team building experience, with all 4 HPC players (well, almost all 4) being very hands-on on deck.

We sailed on the 1962 America’s Cup contender Nefertiti, named after the beautiful Egyptian Queen. She came very close to defending the America’s Cup in 1962 , winning the early Defender trials that year, but lost out to Weatherly in the lighter breezes of August.

“Neffy”, designed and skippered in 1962 by Ted Hood stood for outstanding performance and ability in a strong breeze at the time. Would the HPC team have to face a strong breeze on the polo field the next day? We should soon find out! Given that the Newport bay was hosting the start of a classic regatta the next morning, the bay was full of wonderful classic wooden yachts from a bygone area.
