NEWPORT 2016 by Martin Hay
The 2016 Newport tour by the HPC team provided a complete new challenge to the participants. This year the team had to travel without the leadership and supervision of Nicholas and Annie, due to further international polo commitments from Nicholas in Berlin that weekend. This was almost the first time during the last quarter century that they could not make the annual tour.
Nevertheless Nicholas and Annie prepared the team well (and reminded everyone of their duties of representing
team, club and country!) and Nicholas was certainly asking for a good competition and performance on the field by selecting a 3 goal team made up of Gus Prentice, Ed Courage, Martin Hay and Newport tour veteran and crowd favourite Omar Mangalji.
While it looked like a journey into the unknown for some members of the team, the unbelievable hospitality and precision of planning from our
hosts took over within seconds of our arrival and created a wonderful atmosphere of friendship and good sportsmanship from the very beginning.
The itinerary for the four days provided to us was full of selections and options that rivals any upmarket active- holiday provider.
The welcome chukkas on the Thursday evening created an even more close-to-home feeling when suddenly during the second chukka bagpipes could be heard across the pitch from a neighbouring boarding school!
The chukkas, played fast and fair, already gave us a sense that we would have a game on our hands on Saturday. Everyone involved from the Newport Polo club was pushing the level and the horses kindly provided to us did not hold back either.
