Collaboration for bio-based formulations
A key challenge for personal care formulators is to create natural and sustainable products that do not compromise the levels of performance and safety demanded by consumers today. Many claims of ‘natural’ or ‘plant-based’ content are not supported by certified content, which can make consumers wary of the entire industry. Now, through an innovative collaboration project, DuPont Tate & Lyle Bio Products, Corbion, Inolex, and ACT Solutions are collaborating to
bring the ability to create certified, high performing, bio- based content formulations to the personal care market. Working together they have created a range of personal care product formulations delivering high performance and up to 100 percent bio-based content. A critical requirement of this collaboration was to have each formula receive USDA BioPreferred product certification, which relies on a quantitative ASTM test method performed by a certified ASTM laboratory to determine bio-
based content. This certification has the potential to serve as a new way to quantify the definition of natural ingredients. These ready-made
formulations have been tested across a wide range of industry accepted criteria, including stability testing, to ensure they meet the demanding requirements for personal care products. Based on global consumer trends, the increasing need for both high performance and truly natural ingredients is now a mandate for product formulators.

EDITOR’S COMMENT Paris and New York play host to industry
With in-cosmetics Global and NYSCC Suppliers’ Day just finished at the time of going to press, it is an opportune time to reflect on some of the developments within the industry. Despite becoming a major trend in Europe, there were noticeably more CBD-related products in the US than at the Paris show, so it will be interesting to see if this changes by the time Global returns to Barcelona. In this issue we have a full review of in-cosmetics Global. At the show in Paris, there were also some very interesting prototypes that allow the end user to create the finished product themselves. This has been a topic of discussion and a growing trend for some time, and this year saw some highly impressive examples of products that merged DIY and water-free trends in innovative ways. Also in the review we feature some extracts from the Roundtable discussion hosted by Personal Care. Increasingly manufacturers are trying to ensure their products fit consumers’ lives, so this was a timely topic.

Chris Pickthall, CEO, said: “As a company we are always keen to promote from within and Charlotte’s promotion to the Board is recognition of her hard work, talent and commitment to CPL Aromas. We wish her every success.”
