Andy Braithwaite CEO and Co-Founder, Blue Guru Games

Why was Blue Guru Games established?

We noticed that games were becoming less intricate and interesting, and we identified an opportunity to create games that are not only fun to play but also explore interesting themes and topics such as historical folk stories like Spring-Heeled Jack or ecological issues as highlighted in our forthcoming game Otterly Amazing. We set out to create a brand that's known for great storytelling as well as great gameplay, and we've come a long way towards achieving that objective already.

What differentiates Blue Guru Games?

Our attention to detail is key, best illustrated in our audio, where we source instruments and sounds that are common to the time period and setting of a game. Tings got tricky with Curse of the Mummies, our Ancient Egypt-themed game, but we eventually tracked down the right family of instruments and replicated them - then we added club beats on top. We're obsessed with detail, but we're not making a documentary. It's important to have fun.

We approach all our game themes in the same way, discussing suggestions from the team as a group and researching them in-depth before choosing. We prefer to share interesting historical events that may not be widely known, such as Napoleon and his Generals fleeing from a hunt while being chased by thousands of tame rabbits, and bring those stories to life.

Stories are the way that people and societies bond and learn, and we love to share them. It also makes for really interesting discussions in the office, as we're always learning from each other, which is great.

Design-wise, what sets your games apart?

We have a broad range of mechanics, and it's important to us not to just clone an existing game or mechanic. Where we do draw from common game elements, we're always sure to adjust them to bring something more for the player. All of our art and animations are now completed in-house, and we receive a lot of praise for them.

We don't make it easy on the art department with our theme choices, but they appreciate the variety, and they've nailed it recently. We're strong now and we're improving all the time - it's genuinely exciting knowing what's coming from them in the future.

Do you have a standout title?

Te game that's captured the players' imagination the most so far is Napoleon Vs Rabbits. It's a fantastic theme, and the comedy element of the story led us to recreate it in a pixelated art style. It's not a typical slot mechanically, and we're thrilled that so many players keep coming back to this one.

What's the vision for Blue Guru Games?

We’re a year old if we take our first game release as day one and we’ve learned a heck of a lot in that year. We’ve made some welcome changes in the game development and maths area that are really starting to show fruit now.

We have a fantastic selection of themes and games in the making and we’re working on new mechanics and game styles too. We’re really happy with what we’ve achieved and we couldn’t be more excited about the future.
