This issue boasts an impressive roster of interviews ahead of the IAGA Summit taking place in Belfast, Northern Ireland later this month. A standout is Dan Carpenter, Global Head of Game Tech Sales at Amazon Web Services, who is responsible for helping the world’s top gaming companies innovate using advanced technology to build the next generation of games. Also taking place in June is the Canadian Gaming Summit, the first under SBC’s events umbrella. We sit down with Ray Pineault, President and CEO of Mohegan Gaming, ahead of his appearance in Toronto. Not attending either conference is Adam Goldberg, CEO of Rock & Brews, whose remit is ensuring guests feel like rock stars at a time when youthful interest in the music genre dwindles.


This month we introduce a new feature, ‘Ones to Watch’. For its debut, we’ve drawn up a curated list of young online slot studios looking to change up the established approach.. Whilst these teams comprise upwards of two people compared to the hundreds - sometimes thousands - at the biggest game suppliers, they make up for quantity with quality and dedication to their craft. With size comes a greater emphasis on profit meaning larger studios are constantly under pressure to churn out new games and avoid taking too many chances. With large resources behind each game they have a lot more to lose and tend to stick to a formula that has driven them to their current heights.

Smaller slot developers are at liberty to do whatever they want, frequently giving birth to new mechanics and styles. They don't have the opportunity to create large and technological games, so instead make games with unique gameplay, maths and mechanics. They fill an innovation gap in the market. Many of the studios featured in our first Ones to Watch will likely go on to be swallowed up and acquired by current industry behemoths, one or two will join the top table, and a few might not make it. For the time being, they're making interesting and different games which is what the industry so badly needs.
