IAGA SUMMIT FOCUS: KEYNOTE NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE
INSIGHT IAGA SUMMIT BELFAST - JUNE 20-22, 2023
In one of the most hotly anticipated keynote addresses at the IAGA Summit Belfast, Jonathan Nabavi, Vice President, Public Policy and Government Affairs at National Football League (NFL), highlights the latest sports betting opportunties, issues and points to address for the industry.
Jonathan, what issues are you looking to address in your IAGA keynote?
I’m excited to be able to connect with a distinguished group of executives and share the NFL’s work around sports betting. Since the United States Supreme Court struck down PASPA five years ago, there’s so much opportunity for collaboration around issues such as sports integrity, responsibility messaging, fan engagement, and addressing illegal markets.
What are the key issues being raised at the senate/congress level surrounding sports betting and what part does the NFL play in getting its voice heard?
Te core focus for the NFL remains upholding the integrity of the game and consumer protections. Our advocacy at the federal and state levels supports this mission, and we support public policies that include mandatory information-sharing, the ability for sports to flag markets that may be more easily manipulated, betting responsibility messaging, and the use of consistent Official League Data.
Tese provisions, along with measures such as training, monitoring, and open and consistent engagement with regulators and partners, are essential in helping league’s combat any threats. We applaud the legislators at both the federal and state-level who have thoughtfully engaged with sports leagues on these important issues. Congress and the federal government also have a unique role to play in bringing enforcement actions against illegal operators. Along with our colleagues in industry, we’ve been working to highlight the importance of federal engagement in this area.
What are the big issues being raised by government in relation to the expansion of the betting market in the US? And what role does the NFL play in that debate?
Te answer is very much dependent on the jurisdiction, which will determine outcomes to issues such as who may have rights to pursue a sportsbook, whether online will be available, tax rates, and increasingly the decision to include professional sports franchises and stadiums as retail locations. One incredibly important theme that has emerged across markets is the importance of responsible betting and appropriate advertising.
Te NFL launched our national responsible betting programme in 2021, becoming the first US league to do so, and we recently joined with other major sports leagues and broadcasters to launch the Coalition for Responsible Sports
