INSIGHT IAGA SUMMIT BELFAST - JUNE 20-22, 2023

INSIGHT IAGA SUMMIT BELFAST - JUNE 20-22, 2023

If the dictionary definition of ‘third time’s the charm’ is accurate, then IAGA certainly should expect some luck for the 2023 International Gaming Summit we’ll hold June 20 - 22, as in the four years that have passed since we first announced our intention to hold our annual conference in Belfast, Northern Ireland, we’ve planned and cancelled the Summit twice (in 2020 and 2021), leaving lingering doubts about whether we’d ever make it to Belfast. Now, with the COVID-19 pandemic, face masks and social distancing a thing of the past, it’s almost hard to believe that we’re now counting down the days until our attendees join us at the Culloden Estate and Spa, just outside Belfast city centre, to kick off IAGA’s 40th annual International Gaming Summit.

To many, Belfast might seem an atypical location to hold an international gaming conference, but as a city with a rich history located in a country and region currently exploring gaming regulatory reform, the city provides a perfect backdrop for three days of lively discussions focused on critical issues facing the industry.

Belfast is certainly no stranger to hosting international guests: in April, Belfast took centre stage globally as the city and country commemorated the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Good Friday Agreement, a political treaty designed to end the “Troubles,” 30 years of violent conflict between unionists who wanted the country to remain part of the United Kingdom, and nationalists who wanted the country returned to the republic of Ireland. Tis momentous occasion drew a wide range of dignitaries to the city including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, US President Joe Biden and former President and First Lady Bill and Hillary Clinton, who commemorated the ongoing progress that’s been made since the Agreement was first signed at Hillsborough Castle so long ago. As such, it seems that although twice delayed, the timing for a successful International Gaming Summit couldn’t be better.

Now in its 40th year, IAGA’s Summit has changed quite dramatically since several Nevada attorneys, known for their expertise in gaming law, created an association and its annual conference to unite casino professionals and facilitate more productive negotiations between operators, regulators, and legislators.

Hoping to promote education among executives that would protect and enhance the industry’s professionalism and success, these six attorneys—Robert Faiss, Lyle Rivera, A.J. “Bud” Hicks, Frank Fahrenkopf, Shannon Bybee and Mike Sloan—founded the National Association of Gaming Attorneys (NAGA) and appointed Lyle Rivera as NAGA’s first president. Renamed the International Association of Gaming Advisors in 2007 to reflect the group’s global membership of
