I’m unaware of an industry that talks more about the harm it causes than the gambling industry. I’ve read motoring magazines my entire life and I can count on one hand the editorials dedicated to pollution, congestion, recycling... let along conference and events dedicated to such topics organised by the industry in question. Rarely is an industry so open and honest about the issues it causes and seeks to actively address them in debate and under great scrutiny.


While that’s laudable, the number of wholly positive stories concerning gaming that reach a wider public are scarce. The gambling industry continues to create a narrative about the measures taken to mitigate the harms caused by its actions, but rarely does it find itself on the front foot. Most of the time its fighting a rear-guard action against the effects of gambling, not promoting anything positive - or at least, anything positive that will reach a wider audience.

Two articles in this issue standout as positive gambling stories that deserve to find a wider public as they need no caveats and are unapologetic about the industry that they describe. The first is the European Dealer Championships, organised by the European Casino Association in Monaco in May. The ‘Olympics’ of the casino industry, the coming together of 23 nations to compete in the hallowed halls of the Casino de Monte-Carlo was a gloriously upbeat experience. A celebratory event of all that is good about gaming - and it was immensely watchable too.


The second article was a surprise. Interviewing the speakers at this month’s IAGA Summit in Boston, the topics for debate and the calibre of contributors is outstanding. Having the chance to interview James T. Plousis, the Chairman of the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, to discuss the state’s change of law to allow non-violent former offenders life-altering opportunities and career goals, was a revelation. The fact that the gaming industry can offer such opportunities is both amazing and a welcome relief to the regular diatribe aimed at the sector.
