CASINO AWARDS - RISING STAR 2022 MARION ROSENEDER - VELDEN

I was the only female at the senior casino manager level before accepting the role as Casino Director at Casino Velden. Tis place was filled by a woman only three months later, when Casino Innsbruck appointed another female senior casino manager. So the void that I left as the sole female senior casino manager has already been filled. I am very happy about this. Below this position, at floor management level, there are a lot of women in these roles. However, I would advise caution, as most are 30-35 years old, and unfortunately the way our society works is that most of them will lose several years of their career development if they have children.

Are you at all irritated by the questions about wider women’s issues, as opposed to just talking shop about the casino industry and your career? After all, I wouldn’t be asking a man these questions…

Of course, sometimes it plays on the nerves that I’m confronted by questions repeatedly, which don’t benefit me in terms of my personal development. On the other hand, this is a systemic issue and if we want to address systemic issues then we must ask questions that address the wider debate. It is still necessary, unfortunately, to discuss these issues. I think it is also necessary for the men taking the leadership decisions to self-reflect and deal with these issues.

Earlier this year we interviewed outgoing Casinos Austria Chairman, Bettina Glatz- Kresmner, whereby she spoke about a glass ceiling in the casino gaming industry and called for positive discrimination in this sector – do you agree?

Tere is a glass ceiling in every industry, not just the casino industry. Te current leaders, who are predominantly male work together with young people that are like themselves, which creates the glass ceiling. I also think that women create glass ceilings ourselves, because we place a lot of emphasis on all the roles that constitute our lives, both private and personal. Maybe if we talk about it enough, we can turn glass to wood so that we can visualise it better and know where we should begin to break the ceiling down.

I think that there should be positive discrimination, but this does not mean that we promote women when they have inferior qualifications. If a man and a woman have the same qualifications, then the role must be offered to the female. Yes, this may be unfair on this very man (as it would be vice versa on a female with the same qualification not being promoted), but we are in a process of transition. If gender equality continues at the current pace, according to statistics, it may take another 200 years until we reach parity. I don’t want to wait that long. If we want to speed up the process then we have to positively discriminate. I

Is Casino Director of Casino Velden the ceiling for your career?

My goal with Velden is to modernise the casino from a service and staff standpoint, which will take years. I also don’t have a plan to leave Velden before we successfully obtain the concession for Casino Velden. I turn 40 this year and expect to spend the next decade upon this project, assuring we can operate in Velden until 2045. However, these are hopefully not the last goals I will pursue for the rest of my life.

Do you ever see yourself working outside of the casino sector – or is the casino industry in your blood?

I will give my best professional years to the casino industry and have no regrets about that. Te casino bug either catches you or it doesn’t, but for me it is definitely in my blood.
