CASINO AWARDS - RISING STAR 2022 MARION ROSENEDER - VELDEN

what we can offer. Yes, it is hard, but it is not impossible. We must take the time to care for the development of young people.

Was the move from Salzburg to Casino Velden another organic step?

Te management position at Casino Velden was vacant for over a year and I did not actively apply during this time because, at that point, I was just about to start the senior casino manager position in Salzburg. For me personally, I wouldn’t have felt competent enough to come to the role from a marketing position. I needed the time on the casino floor to appreciate all the processes involved in the role. I spent a lot of time on the floor watching and learning the processes, from how we deal with the staff through to the guests. I became very absorbed by this process. Professionally, I took such a lot from this period of time, which made me confident when I was approached to take the role at Velden.

You’ve described a reoccurring gender theme in which a man accepts a role knowing only a fraction of what is needed, as opposed to a woman, who needs to know it in its entirety. Is that the case here?

I am very conscious of this distinction. I must feel confident when I am taking on a role like this, and it affects my style of leadership if I am not. Being insecure would make me a bad leader, so for me, personally, it was better to wait. However, that puts us women in second place for every role because we want to take one to two years longer than a male candidate. I would say that we also focus upon the areas in which there is room for improvement and development potential, as opposed to what we already possess that’s positive and beneficial. I thought about this myself a lot. In becoming the only female Casino Director within Casinos Austria, I want to make other women, other potential candidates, aware of this mechanism.

If you were to advise another woman to become a Casino Director, what would you tell them?

Tere are two different things that make-up casino management; one is content, which is the knowledge of the gaming sector. In my own context, I don’t think you need 15 years to understand how a slot machine works and which target groups we have on the floor, who are the most important hi-rollers etc. However, working 15 years in this industry you gain so much experience, both with people and situations. As a leadership personality, I needed 15 years. I wouldn’t have been able to become a Casino Director at say 30 years old. I needed the eight years in Salzburg in which I learned a lot from the director there concerning leadership and team management. I also gave myself the opportunity to take all this experience in a professional context, combined with my

education, to round out my personality and give me the self-confidence to take this role.

What attracted you to the role at Casino Velden? The location first and foremost – or the role?

What attracted me was the challenge. I concluded that my experience meant that I can positively contribute to the casino – that was the core of the decision. My experiences are very diverse as are the strategic requirements of Casino Velden as the touristic center of the region, entertainment and event location. I think it is likely that I am the right person to meet these challenges. Tis is my motivation. Working in one of the most beautiful casinos in Europe is an asset as well, of course.

Was the step to Casino Director a big one? Was it what you imagined?

Taking the role and being the person in charge was automatic to me. Once I have made the decision to commit to a role I just go ahead and do it. Te bigger change is an emotional one.

Being a senior casino manager, I always had the trust and back-up of the manager above me. Now I am solely responsible for my whole team, all staff, all guests, the house. I take that very serious and felt this most acutely in the first few weeks at Velden.

What has been the reaction of staff and customers to a woman in this role?

Tere was surprise, but what was brought to me was only positive – finally a woman – a young woman, in this role. What was fed back was positive surprise and, in addition, local media has been very interested too. It is something special in Austria that a woman should be running a casino. Tat said, I’m pretty sure there are also people viewing female leaders and my position negatively – but they aren’t the ones approaching me.

You are the first woman to head a Casinos Austria casino – should we be celebrating or commiserating the fact?

Of course, this is 2022, in the middle of the 21st
