INSIGHT IAGA SUMMIT BOSTON - JUNE 27-29, 2022

It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly three years since IAGA held its last International Gaming Summit in Half Moon Bay, California, wrapping up our three day conference with cocktails on cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean with optimistic thoughts of joining our IAGA colleagues the following year in Northern Ireland. As we said goodbye, surely none of us could envision that evening would be the last time we’d meet in person for such a long time and instead we would become resigned to catching up via Zoom, Teams and Google Meet! Now, as we finalise the details for a June Summit in Boston, Massachusetts, we are anxious to welcome our friends and colleagues to Boston in-person!

Putting all of the now-familiar COVID-19 restrictions / requirements / considerations aside, planning an event in Boston has been a somewhat challenging task, as this historic city and the surrounding New England region offer so many possible distractions, especially for first time visitors. With Native American settlements dating back to at least 2400 BC, what is now known as Boston was founded in 1630 by English Puritans in search of religious freedom, and the city is well known for its role in the American Revolution, its prestigious higher education offerings, its iconic Boston Public Library and a few prominent professional sports teams.

In such an historical city, it’s fitting then that this year’s Summit venue dates back to 1912 and was built on the site of the city’s original Museum of Fine Arts. Located in Boston’s Back Bay district and adjacent to the Boston Public Library, the country’s first free municipal library that boasts spectacular murals painted by John Singer Sargent, the Fairmont Copley Plaza is a short walk from the Boston Public Garden and Boston Common as well as from numerous destinations on the Boston Freedom Trail, a 2.5 mile route between 16 historic sites that tell the story of the American Revolution. It’s in this iconic location that we’ll hold our 2022 International Gaming Summit, where the city’s history and rich cultural heritage will provide a perfect backdrop for the myriad of events we have planned.

Now in its 39th year, the Summit has changed quite dramatically since several Nevada attorneys, known for their expertise in gaming law, created an association and its annual conference to unite casino professionals and facilitate more productive negotiations between operators, regulators and legislators. Hoping to promote education among executives that would protect and enhance the industry’s professionalism and success, these six attorneys—Robert Faiss, Lyle Rivera, A.J. “Bud” Hicks, Frank Fahrenkopf, Shannon Bybee and Mike Sloan—founded the National Association of Gaming Attorneys (NAGA) and appointed Lyle Rivera as NAGA’s first president. Renamed the International Association of Gaming Advisors in 2007 to reflect the group’s global membership of representatives from all gaming industry segments, IAGA’s annual Summit draws
