LATIN AMERICA FOCUS Brazil

Michael Tobin, CEO and Co-Founder Continent 8 Technologies

Michael is co-founder of Continent 8 Technologies PLC and the creator of the “Continent 8” brand. He is an entrepreneur by nature and a former Director of Empire State Development, the lead economic development agency for New York State.

The internet is a wild place, if I asked a common person on the street… What is the internet? Where does it exist physically? Where are the websites stored physically? And, how does the information flow throw the world to get to you and your smart device? Most people wouldn’t have a clue. A company like ours, is the backbone and the answer to many of the questions I just made. It is smart of governments to work together with people like us to make it safe, fast and a reliable experience for the end users of their countries.

Te world’s largest online gaming data centre and global network solutions provider, Continent 8 Technologies, provides highly reliable managed hosting, security and global network solutions for today’s online business-critical platforms. We talked to CEO and Co-Founder Michael Tobin about some of the inroads the company is making in Brazil and the wider Latin American market

Michael, could you provide us with an overview of the Continent 8’s operations in Latin America now and going forwards?

At Continent 8 we are at the early stages of expansion into Latin America. We expect to open 3 new points of presence in various countries in the LATAM region including Brazil. We also are bringing our industry state-the-art redundant network. Our global private network is the key; bringing it to the region will optimize the operation of Online Sports betting for many operators that already host with us in other parts of the world.

In the US, Continent 8 has helped the Division of Gaming Enforcement to help shape regulations around hosting of services in the market. Could you tell us more about how Continent 8 works with state bodies in Latin America?

Continent 8 is known for helping regulators and policy makers make educated decisions around the technology aspect of online gaming and many other regulated sectors. We have been providing hosting, network connectivity, security, and compliance to the online gaming industry for over 20 years. We have seen it all, from Cyber security threats to regulatory changes. We make ourselves available to government bodies for free consultancy and this has proven to be valuable as many people want to be well informed before they make regulatory decisions that will stay in place for many years and affect millions of people and businesses.

You met recently with policy makers in Brazil to P50 NEWSWIRE / INTERACTIVE / MARKET DATA

discuss the technology issues related to fixed odds sports betting. Could you tell us more about that?

It was a very pleasant conversation around the topics of Cloud hosting, Cyber security and network threats. I think the Brazilian government is very smart in asking for information from the gaming sector as whole, not just us. Asking for information and being well informed is a good sign that the Brazilian Government wants to make the regulatory process transparent and as straight forward as possible.

What specific challenges does Brazil offer when it comes to the regulation of sports betting? How would Continent 8 help address these challenges?

Tough question! It all depends on how the technical requirements are written in the regulation. If there is no requirements for gaming operators applying for licenses around hosting location, cyber security, certification of hosting site or transparency of the data, we may see some challenges there. As I said, the internet is a wild place. You can have a rogue website
