Casinos are taxed on a graduated scale starting at 0.25 per cent on revenue up to $2m and up to 20 per cent on revenue of more than $13m. In 2023 the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission approved cashless wagering at the casinos. Players must have their identities verified whilst systems must enable players to set wagering limits. Sports betting is taxed at a rate of 10 per cent plus a further 0.25 per cent federal excise tax on wa- gering handle. In 2023 casinos and sports betting generated $200m in gaming tax revenue.
Tere are two tribal gaming casinos operated by Ute Mountain Ute tribe (Ute Mountain Casino in Towaoc) which opened in 1992 and Southern Ute tribe (Sky Ute Casino in Ignacio) which opened in 1993 and moved locations in 2008.
Colorado has 33 casino gaming facilities in three
towns – 15 in Black Hawk, six in Central City and 12 in Cripple Creek. Tese were
approved during a statewide referendum in 1990 and the state began with 11 casinos
whilst the highest number of 76 was recorded in 1992.
