Tere are four racinos and one landbased casino in West Virginia each offering slots, table games and sports betting and under the authority of the West Virginia Lottery Commission. Gaming was authorised back in 1994 when


slots were permitted at licensed racetracks. Table games were approved in 2007 whilst a year later casino gaming was approved at Te Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, whilst table games were added a year later. Te Greenbrier offers 160 slots and 31 table


games plus FanDuel sports betting facilities and BetMGM online sportsbook. Te four racinos are located in Charles Town,


Mountaineer Casino Resort, Wheeling Island and Mardi Gras. Te Hollywood Casino at Charles Town Races is the largest of the racinos and ac- counts for 40 per cent of landbased casino revenue in the state. Te casinos do face competition from neigh-


bouring casinos plus a network of VLTS. Tere are almost 8,200 VLTs located in 1,159 retail es- tablishments such as bars and taverns and revenues from these amounted to $493.6m in 2023. Tere is a maximum of 9,000 VLTs permitted.

permitted whilst in 2019 igaming was authorised through online casino platforms partnering with the state’s casinos and racinos. By the end of 2023 there were eight online sportsbooks and eight online casinos. Casino GGR for 2023 amounted to $805.9m


up 6.5 per cent on the previous year. Slots saw $497m of this whilst table games saw $103.6m Sports betting revenue was $47.8m although igaming saw $157.5m in revenue, up almost 40 per cent from 2022 data.


In 2018 retail and online sports betting was permitted whilst in 2019 igaming was authorised. By the end of 2023 there were eight online sportsbooks and eight online casinos.
