flow around and under these low- standoff components and then quickly evaporate from the tight- ly-packed boards without trap- ping the fluid and contaminant on the PCB. The new fluids are also surfactant-free which removes

fluid, resulting in overall energy and cost savings. Since the mod- ern cleaning fluids boil at a lower temperature than nPB, parts come out of the vapor degreasing machine cool enough to handle. This allows them to be immediate- ly processed and used, speeding up the entire production process and improving overall production efficiencies. Many modern vapor de -

any additional washing and rins- ing steps, often associated with aqueous cleaning, to get clean, residue-free PCBs.

cleaning fluids typically have a lower boiling point and heat of vaporization than nPB. It requires less energy to heat the cleaning

greasing fluids are based on more environmentally-friendly hydrofluoro-olefin (HFO) technology. They typically have a negligible ozone depletion potential (ODP) and a global warming poten- tial (GWP) under 3, making them safe, sustainable nPB alternatives. They also con- tain no fluorinated green- house gases. And unlike nPB, modern cleaning fluids are not considered a haz- ardous air pollutant (HAP) and are exempt from most state and local HAP testing,

documentation and reporting requirements. Modern cleaning fluids are

also nonflammable, making them a preferred choice of occu- pational health and safety offi- cers. Plus, most modern cleaning fluids have an ACGIH long-term exposure limit, with a time- weighted average of eight hours, or about 200 parts per million.

That is 2,000 times better than nPB. Most also have a lighter, less offensive aroma than nPB, making the overall work envi- ronment more pleasant.

Making the Switch In most cases, modern clean-

ing fluids use existing vapor degreasing equipment. After emp- tying and cleaning the vapor degreaser, the replacement fluid “drops in” to the machinery with- out an appreciable change to the cleaning process. That means lit- tle disruption to production work- flow and no retraining of opera- tors on an entirely new process. Modern cleaning fluids are excel- lent replacements for nPB, and also for other cleaning solvents, including trichloroethylene (TCE), benzene, perchloroethylene, and methylene chloride. A complete nPB ban is like-

ly to happen in the United States soon. It is better to prepare now by proactively replacing nPB used in vapor degreasers. Wor - king with an experienced clean- ing fluid supplier can help com- panies to find replacements that are already field-tested and proven. Preferably, that supplier

should have lab testing capabili- ties. Chemists can perform cleaning trials on the customer’s PCBs and soils to verify that the new cleaning fluid is the best fit. They should also provide ongoing support in the transition away from nPB to a healthier and more sustainable cleaning fluid. Contact: MicroCare, LLC,

YXLON Presents New Microfocus

X-Ray Systems HUDSON, OH — YXLON Inter - national has released new mod- els in its Cheetah and Cougar EVO microfocus X-ray series. The new versions have been enhanced with options that sig- nificantly increase efficiency in X-ray inspection. Laminography with micro -

3D slice in the systems is not new, but the visualization with the FF CT software, now stan- dard, provides brilliant and detailed 3D images on a new level. The software remains com- patible with Volume Graphics and corresponding analysis tools. A new high-resolution flat-

panel detector, the ORYX 1616 with a size of 1280 x 1280 pixels, has been introduced that offers a 50 percent larger field-of-view than the standard version. The optimized electronics in the detector enable higher speed and greater stability for 24/7 use. The ORYX 1616 not only has improved radiation resistance, but can also work with a much lower radiation dose due to its sensitivity. For particularly sen- sitive test parts, YXLON also offers its dose reduction kit to reduce X-ray radiation to an absolute minimum and protect test parts even further. Contact: YXLON c/o Comet
