of power was being drawn by a com- ponent of the ship’s main diesel en- gines called a jacket water heater. At that point, according to Leeb,
crewmembers were skeptical about the reading but went to check it any- way. The heaters were hidden under protective metal covers, but as soon as the cover was removed from the suspect device, smoke came pouring out, and severe corrosion and broken insulation were clearly revealed. The system is designed to be
easy to use with little training. The computer dashboard includes dials for each device being monitored, with needles that will stay in the green zone when things are normal, but swing into the yellow or red zone
when a problem is spotted. Detecting anomalies before they
become serious hazards is the dash- board’s primary task, but Leeb points out that it can also perform other useful functions. By constantly monitoring which devices are being used at what times, it could enable energy audits to find devices that were turned on unnecessarily when nobody was using them, or spot less- efficient motors that are drawing more current than their similar counterparts. It could also help en- sure that proper maintenance and inspection procedures are being fol- lowed, by showing whether or not a device has been activated as sched- uled for a given test. Web:

Algorithm Automatically Spots Hacks in Chips
Kaiserslautern, Germany — In early 2018, cybersecurity researchers dis- covered two security flaws they said were present in almost every high- end processor made and used by ma- jor companies. Known ominously as Spectre and Meltdown, these flaws were troubling because they repre- sented a new type of breach not pre- viously known that could allow hack- ers to infer secret data — passwords, social security numbers and medical records — from the way computers pre-calculate certain data using ar- chitectural features called “out-of-or- der execution” and “speculative exe- cution” to speed up their processes. Spectre and Meltdown attacks
have emerged in the past year and more are expected. In the “covert channel attacks,” no data ever changes hands between the hacked processor and the attackers trying to steal data. The information is inferred in the way that an answer in a cross-

word puzzle can be guessed, despite not knowing it. Such hacks, therefore, are nearly impossible to spot. Computer scientists at TU
Kaiserslautern, Germany, in collabo- ration with researchers from Stan- ford University in California, have taken a novel approach to exposing potential flaws in new chip designs. It is an algorithm called Unique Pro- gram Execution Checking (UPEC). UPEC analyzes micro-architec-
tural side effects of design decisions and detects if they can be exploited to create covert channels. What is key is that UPEC is exhaustive. It takes into account all possible programs that can run on the processor. In real-world tests, the research
team had UPEC analyze several open-source chip designs and identi- fied a number of previously unknown flaws. The team also demonstrated that such weaknesses easily result from normal design processes and can affect virtually any processor — not just high-end processor types. Web:
