Kings and nobles spent much time and effort defending their lands from attack. These attacks came from other kings and nobles who wanted more land or who simply wanted to steal whatever treasures they could find. So once a noble or knight received land from the king, the first thing he did was build a castle on it. During an attack, the noble could defend himself and his people from within the castle.
Motte and bailey castles
The first type of castle was a motte and bailey castle. First a hill was built, often from a pile of rocks and soil. This was called the motte. On top of this hill a wooden tower called a keep was built surrounded by a wooden fence. Below the motte there was an area called the bailey. A wooden fence surrounded the bailey and a moat (ditch) was dug around the fence. In the bailey there were houses where the noble’s soldiers and slaves would live. The noble and his family lived in the keep. If they were attacked, they could protect themselves in the bailey or in the keep if necessary. Later, these wooden castles were replaced by stone.
