Introduction The island of Ireland has been partitioned since 1920. Northern Ireland consists of six Ulster counties and remained part of the United Kingdom. The other 26 counties became independent. The historical connections between Ulster and Britain were outlined in Chapter 8: The Plantations. Chapter 10: 1798 Rebellion examined the consequences of political and religious dissatisfaction between groups in Ireland generally and in Ulster specifically. Finally, in Chapter 15: Ireland 1911–23 the immediate causes for conflict were outlined. On and off since the sixteenth century Ulster has been a focus of conflict.
