The USA, the USSR, and more recently Russia, have always felt it was important to intervene in the politics of other countries to protect their interests. Sometimes this has meant that governments with questionable human rights records have been put in power. This has been done despite legal and legitimate elections. Research the American role in the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Chile in 1973. (a) Do you think it is acceptable for a country to involve themselves in the political events of another? Give reasons for your answer.
(b) As a class, discuss the coup in Chile in 1973. Give reasons for and against the American support for this overthrow of the government.
(c) Are there any other places in the world where countries have been involved in the politics of another country? Name and provide details to support your answer.
12. The United Nations – a waste of money or vital for world peace? The UN has been in existence for over 70 years. Some people consider the work of its agencies like UNICEF and the UNHCR as being vital for looking after people around the world. Others consider it to be a waste of money and unable to make meaningful change. Research these different views and discuss with your class whether the UN is worth keeping.
