A short history of Early Christian Ireland Although it was originally thought that Christianity came to Ireland in 432 AD with St Patrick, historians have discovered that there were Christians living in Ireland before his arrival. Christianity became very important in Ireland and has had a long-lasting impact on the development of our country. Many of the oldest historical sources we have date from the Early Christian period of 400 AD to 1000 AD. Because monks and nuns were educated and taught how to read and write, they were able to write things down. These written sources provide historians with a lot of information about the lives of people during this period in history. Beautiful books like the Book of Kells and the Book of Durrow were created at this time. Monasteries and convents (where monks or nuns lived) were built and some, such as Clonmacnoise in County Offaly, still exist today. The people who lived there produced many beautiful pieces of metalwork and masonry (stonework). This chapter will look at life during Early Christian Ireland and how Christianity has influenced the history of Ireland.
