Preventi ng pressure ulcers through technology

At HHFT we want to eliminate Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers. Preventi ng pati ents from developing pressure ulcers in our hospitals is an ongoing campaign and we have invested in a new stock of advanced matt resses to help us.

Every bed in the Trust will soon be equipped with a special matt ress that can be infl ated to reduce pressure on vulnerable areas of the body, preventi ng pressure ulcers from developing.

The matt resses are already in place in our emergency departments and acute assessment areas, and are making a diff erence on our elderly care, orthopaedic and speciality medicine wards.

Vicky Booker, ti ssue viability lead, said:

“Pressure relief is now available prett y much instantly at the touch of a butt on and there’s no need for pati ents to be moved manually by staff , which improves a pati ent’s experience as well as their safety.

“The matt resses have made a diff erence on our elderly care wards, where most people would expect there to be more problems, but they are also really helping in our emergency departments and medical assessment units.

“Pati ents are parti cularly at risk of sustaining ti ssue damage in the early stages of admission, when they are most unwell. Being able to get preventati ve treatment

in place as soon as they come into hospital is really helping to prevent pressure ulcers occurring.”
