Recognising excepti onal care
The excepti onal care provided by nurses, midwives, healthcare assistants and allied health professionals was celebrated at the 12th annual Director of Nursing Awards ceremony.
A record 480 nominati ons fl ooded in from relati ves and former pati ents who had received treatment at one of our hospitals or in the community. All told moving stories of care, compassion and kindness, and where staff made a big diff erence to pati ents and their families.
The nursing team from St Cross Ward, at Royal Hampshire County Hospital, and community midwife Alice Gynn, were the big winners on the night, taking home two awards each.

"I met Alice for the fi rst ti me at my booking appointment and immediately felt glad that she would be my community midwife. She was so encouraging, reassuring, relaxed and friendly that I felt totally at ease.
"She conti nued to be hugely supporti ve throughout my pregnancy, from reassuring me when I was worried about diabetes to encouraging me in my wish for a home water birth.
"She did a fantasti c job of raising my spirits and keeping me positi ve when I was feeling prett y gloomy. On several occasions Alice put herself on call for me when she was technically off duty and always made me feel important without being a burden.

"I was terrifi ed aft er having a bad experience at a diff erent hospital as a child and developing a phobia. The team allowed my family to stay with me and throughout the night (I was very upset and nervous) they all conti nued to look aft er me.
