Giving a voice to young pati ents

Children and young people now have the chance to shape the way children’s health services are delivered at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital.

The Basingstoke Hospital Youth Forum was set up earlier this year to give a voice to young people aged between 11 and 16 who have been treated at the hospital. The group will meet three ti mes a year, and has already identi fi ed hospital food and night-ti me noise as two of their prioriti es.

Members have reported that the menu is not always child-friendly and that porti on sizes can be a problem. They are working closely with the hospital’s catering team to address this and will get the chance to sample a range of the opti ons available during their next meeti ng.

In additi on, aft er hearing that young people someti mes found it hard to sleep at night on the children’s ward, the hospital has signed up to the Sleep for Health in Hospital programme and shh project is looking at ways of reducing brightness and the noise caused by doors, ward phones and alarms.

Members of the Youth Forum are also taking part in walkarounds of the departments to assess things like ti diness and the friendliness of staff , and they are even sitti ng in on interviews for new members of the team, and taking part in the decision-making process.

Judith Bennett , child health clinical matron, said:

“The meeti ngs we have had so far have been really producti ve. The whole team is excited about the Youth Forum and looking forward to working with its members to improve our services.” Donna Green, chief nurse, att ended the most recent meeti ng of the forum:

“The young people have already come up with some fantasti c ideas and I’m looking forward to hearing what else they think we could do diff erently.”
