Celebrati ng learning
We launched our Acorn Educati on Awards this year to recognise our colleagues across the Trust who have shown real dedicati on to educati on.
The awards celebrated eff orts to promote and celebrate learning, whether that be students on placement, staff who have a brilliant mentor, or measures that have been taken to encourage staff to take up educati onal opportuniti es. There were fi ve categories in total, with nominati ons coming from colleagues and peers.
Among the winners were Ward G2 at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, who won the Placement of the Year award aft er creati ng a really positi ve experience for a third-year nursing student undertaking her fi nal placement.
G2 is a paediatric ward and was chosen to pilot collaborated learning in practi ce (CLIP), which is a new model of training for students on placement.
Asma Abbass, ward sister, said:
“Rather than showing students what to do and then observing them, we give them problems to solve and oversee them as they fi nd the soluti ons. It’s great to see them work things out for themselves and we have found that it makes the students more confi dent and that they learn faster.
“We’ve had really good feedback from the students and great buy-in from the medical teams, who have been really supporti ve in involving the students.
“We were really pleased to win the Acorn Award. As a team we work really hard to help students and it was lovely to be recognised for the work we are doing. All of us were students once, so we know how important it is to help the next generati on of nurses.”
