Improving career

A number of our staff have taken the opportunity to improve their career prospects while earning a wage

through our partnership with the Open University. Leah worked in the community as a carer before joining

the Trust as a healthcare support worker fi ve years ago.

Aft er completi ng her NVQ, she is now in the fi nal year of her Open University nursing degree.

“I joined the Trust aft er hearing about the Open University scheme. I really feel that working here gives me an advantage because I can stay in touch with staff and pati ents on the ward.

Even when I’m on placements in other areas, I sti ll spend ti me on this ward as a healthcare support worker, so I really get to know pati ents on a personal level.”

Leah’s week includes one day as a healthcare support work, one day on the ward as a student, and three days for studying.

“I love the fl exibility of the course. I don’t think I’d have been able to study to be a nurse if I wasn’t able to earn a salary at the same ti me.

“There’s a lot of work, but as long as you keep on top of it, it’s okay. It’s a

great alternati ve to the traditi onal university route and I would encourage other healthcare support workers hoping to get into nursing to look into it.”
