Pioneering nursing apprenti ceships
We are proud to have become one of the fi rst Trusts to off er a nursing apprenti ceship. Run in partnership with the Open University, the programme gives healthcare support workers the opportunity to increase their skills and train as nurses through a fully-supported apprenti ceship.
The nursing apprenti ceship operates alongside our existi ng clinical apprenti ceship schemes, run in partnership with Basingstoke College of Technology and Fareham College.
Nurse apprenti ces spend two days a week learning additi onal duti es normally performed by nurses, under the supervision of more experienced colleagues, and two days a week in their normal role as a healthcare support worker. They also spend one day a week studying, away from the working environment.
George Grinham is one of the fi rst people to embark on a nursing apprenti ceship at the Trust:
“I’ve always enjoyed helping people, but the traditi onal route of studying a nursing degree at university just didn’t appeal to me. I would rather work and learn on the job than study full ti me.
“I’m enjoying the apprenti ceship so far. The transiti on from healthcare support worker to nurse apprenti ce took some getti ng used to, but the whole team have been really supporti ve and are keen to help me.
“I’m excited about all the things I’m going to learn, see and experience. I’m also really excited that, come the end of the programme, I’ll be a registered nurse. That is a real thrill for me and something I’m really looking forward to.”
