Bringing you the latest Business News updates from the science industry Microscopy News by Heather Hobbs The Microscience Microscopy Congress 2014

This year sees a new era in the Microscience series of events with the launch of the Microscience Microscopy Congress – mmc2014.

The world’s best speakers

The mmc2014 international conference has attracted some of the world’s best-known speakers.

Four parallel sessions will run throughout the event covering the full breadth of light and electron microscopy, and embracing the physical and life sciences. Each conference session includes headline invited speakers, contributed papers, and dedicated poster sessions. If you are active in microscopy, mmc2014 provides the best platform to present your work.

A free exhibition and training opportunities

Running alongside the conference is Europe’s largest microscopy and imaging exhibition. It will be home to one hundred companies, providing outstanding opportunities to see and try cutting-edge equipment. Entry is free. Within the exhibition there are also free training opportunities. There is the RMS Learning Zone - a fully equipped teaching and learning facility staffed by impartial representatives of the Royal Microscopical Society. And, there is a programme of exhibitor workshops that will provide invaluable industry insights.

Label-free Imaging

Phase Focus Ltd is pleased to report on a paper* describing its patented technology based on ptychography: “Ptychography - a label free, high-contrast imaging technique for live cells using quantitative phase information”

This open access paper was

written by a team of scientists from the Imaging and Cytometry Laboratory, part of the Bioscience Technology Facility in the Department of Biology at the University of York

Lead authors Joanne Marrison and Laboratory Head Peter O’Toole summarised the motivation behind the studies: “Cell imaging often relies on synthetic or genetic fl uorescent labels, to provide contrast which can be far from ideal for imaging cells in their in vivo state. We report on the biological application of a label-free, high contrast microscopy technique known as ptychography, in which the image producing step is transferred from the microscope lens to a high-speed phase retrieval algorithm. We demonstrate that this technology is appropriate for label-free imaging of adherent cells and is particularly suitable for reporting cellular changes such as mitosis, apoptosis and cell differentiation. The high contrast, artefact-free, focus-free information rich images allow dividing cells to be distinguished from non-dividing cells by a greater than two-fold increase in cell contrast, and we demonstrate this technique is suitable for downstream automated cell segmentation and analysis.”

The authors concluded that as tychography removes the need for use of cytotoxic labels it offered high potential particularly for cancer research and drug discovery. “It addresses many of the fundamental problems inherent in current microscopy techniques. Put simply, what you get is far more than what you see. Artefacts of sample preparation which may arise from labelling or use of markers are negated,” said Peter O’Toole.

FEI Image Contest Open

FEI has opened its Image Contest for 2014 with categories including ‘The Natural World’, ‘The Human Body’, and ‘Around the House’. All FEI instrument owners are invited to submit their best images through to the end of the year; some of them will be used in the free National Geographic iPad® app, ‘Mysteries of the Unseen World.’

FEI is also pleased to announce the winner of its 2013 Image Contest: Marcos Rosado of the Electron Microscopy Division of the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), Spain, for his ‘Acacia Dealbata Flower’ image.

“The 2013 FEI Image Contest has brought in some amazing examples of microscopy skill, research and creativity,” said John Williams, FEI’s Vice President of Strategic Marketing. “Many of the images have been featured on numerous media outlets, including NBC News and The Huffi ngton Post. We would like to congratulate Marcos Rosado on winning this year’s contest for his stunning fl ower image.”

This SEM image shows an Acacia dealbata (yellow mimosa) fl ower about to open. The fl ower is about 4.5 mm across. The image demonstrates the very large depth of fi eld possible with an electron microscope. The fl ower was removed from the tree and put into the microscope in a fresh state, and the image was taken as soon as possible to avoid structural damage. All electron microscope images are gray scale (black and white), so false colour was added to this image using an image processing program.
