Laboratory Products 73 Bespoke British Built Autoclave for American Market

First autoclave built by UK Company Priorclave for the American market following announcement that it has approval to manufacture to ASME standards was actually a bespoke designed, double stacked steam steriliser. This somewhat unique autoclave build comprised two 150L front loading autoclaves stacked vertically and encased in a single housing with all associated pipework. Although stacked to save space each autoclave is a separate entity with independent controls mounted on the side panel allowing both sterilisers to operate simultaneously with different process settings.

“This sale highlights that British designed and manufactured products are still among the very best in world and are clearly in demand. During 2013 Priorclave achieved a sharp increase in export sales, the ASME approval gave recognition to and reaffirmed the strength and quality of our build programme,” said Lee Oakley, Sales Director.

Each 150 litre autoclave has a 500mm diameter by 740mm deep stainless steel sterilising chamber and features the Quickseal-2 single action door closure system which is fitted with thermal and pressure locks. Although allowing for easy door actuation, the inherent safety features prevent opening of the autoclave at load temperatures above 80oC and pressures above 0.2 Bar.

These two autoclaves also benefit from Priorclave’s Tactrol 2 microprocessor based, control system with very easy and fully variable setting of process time and temperature and graphic indication of cycle status. Operation is fully automatic once process temperature and time have been set and the cycle is started.

Although this bespoke build was first off the ASME production line Priorclave has a healthy order book for ASME approved sterilisers based on many of its standard steriliser designs such as compact 40 litre bench-top models to larger round chamber autoclaves up to 200 litre.

28597pr@reply-direct.com DNA Enrichment Technology Enriches Low-level DNA Mutations from Whole Blood

EKF Diagnostics announces a major breakthrough for its PointMan DNA enrichment technology for potential use in future cancer testing and treatment. The first successful results of a collaboration between EKF Molecular Diagnostics and the Institute of Life Sciences at Swansea University have demonstrated the detection of gene mutations in blood from samples archived in the Wales Cancer Bank. The Company’s PointMan technology was used to analyse the whole blood of cancer patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma (skin cancer that has spread) enabling the identification of gene mutations associated with response to drug treatment. Crucially, the results observed for mutations in the gene BRAF were consistent with the formalin fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) tissue samples. FFPE being the laboratory standard method to prepare all biopsy samples for pathology review in order to diagnose the cancer. These results have been confirmed by DNA sequencing which had failed to identify the mutations prior to sample enrichment through EKF’s PointMan technology.

Dr Ricardo Del Sol, Senior Lecturer, ILS Swansea University, commented: “These results are a clear indication of the potential for PointMan to enable the use of a blood sample to assess the mutation status of cancer patients. We look forward to continuing this important work with EKF Molecular to validate our findings.”

EKF Molecular’s portfolio of PointMan DNA enrichment products include; BRAF, KRAS, EGFR, NRAS and JAK2. PointMan, is a real-time PCR technology that provides reliable and extremely sensitive detection for cancer mutations. It is highly efficient in amplifying the target sequence of interest, whilst suppressing amplification of the wild-type. The resulting sample is effectively enriched for the mutation, thereby having the potential to offer industry leading sensitivity in a wide variety of sample types, including whole blood. This is demonstrated in the ILS Swansea study.

28282pr@reply-direct.com ADVERTORIAL There is an Easy Way to Control Climate Changes

Putting technology at the fingertips of researchers. Aralab’s new touch-screen ClimaPlus controller, integrated into all climatic chambers and controlled environment rooms, is a new step towards ease of use in climatic simulation, placing all environmental variables in an intuitive icon based interface for all programming, scheduling, and alarm functions.

Main chamber processes such as temperature, humidity, light intensity or CO2

Adding external sensors or features such as air flow speed or automatic nurturing of plants is virtually automatic and all new functions become integrated on both the controller functions and controller memory. This will provide an increased capacity of research variables and information, ultimately improving the quality of all experiments.

Arctic Cold and Tropical Heat in the Same Controlled Environment

Aralab, a leading European manufacturer of climatic chambers and controlled environment rooms has introduced a new climatic chamber for Plant Research.

The new Aralab FITOCLIMA 2500 sets a new standard in controlled environments, introducing the ‘Auto-Defrost’ option, making it possible for researchers to work with full light intensities at negative temperatures without temperature defrost spikes.

Adding to the wide temperature and humidity ranges, light control was also improved with numerous lighting options that can increase research control and reduce operating costs. Examples: LED lights with fully adjustable spectral distribution or the most modern and energy efficient ceramic metal halide lamps, both providing more than 1.000µmoles/m²/s-1 (74.000 Lux) at 50cm from the lights.

Height adjustable shelves guarantee the optimal positioning of the specimens at any time during the experiment, also allowing for an efficient control of required light intensities.
