is expected to attract more than 18,000 attendees from industry, academia and government from 90 countries worldwide. Pittcon provides a showcase for scientific innovations on laboratory equipment, technology and supplies, unique networking opportunities and educational programmes. Experience cutting-edge technology from over 930 exhibitors, a diverse Technical Program of over 2000 presentations as well as short courses and networking sessions that provide the chance to exchange innovative ideas with scientists from around the world.

Dr Steven A. Carr (pictured), Director of Proteomics at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, will be the Wallace H. Coulter Plenary Lecture speaker for Pittcon 2014. His lecture, ‘Quantitative Proteomics in Biology, Chemistry and Medicine’, will be delivered on Sunday, 2 March at 4:30pm in the Grand Ballroom, S100a McCormick Place.

Dr Carr is internationally recognised as a leader in the development of novel proteomics methods and in their application in biology and medicine. Dr Carr and his group collaborate with scientists throughout the greater Broad community (Broad Institute, Harvard, Harvard Medical School, and the 17 Harvard affiliated hospitals) to apply state-of-the art proteomics technology to address compelling questions in biology, chemistry and clinical medicine. He has over 200 publications on development and use of proteomics and biological mass spectrometry.

Carr’s lecture will address the new era of quantitative biology enabled by mass spectrometry based proteomic technologies that have arrived. The content, relative abundance, modification states and interaction partners of proteins in a dynamic and temporal manner on a near-global basis in organelles, whole cells and clinical samples, providing information of unprecedented detail can now be defined. At the Broad Institute, Carr and

his team are employing these technologies in a wide array of studies including delineating the genetic underpinnings of mitochondrial disorders, connecting cancer genotype to molecular phenotype, unravelling the basis of the innate-immune response, identifying the mechanism of action of drug-like molecules and to discover and verify protein biomarkers of disease. A representative set of project vignettes will be presented to convey a sense of the breadth and depth of application of modern proteomics to biology and medicine.

The 2014 James L. Waters Annual Symposium will centre on the commercialisation of MALDI-TOF. The speakers chosen are pioneers in its development and commercialisation and are uniquely qualified to discuss the topic. The presenters will also discuss the current state of the technique and its future. Application areas include genomics, proteomics and other ‘omics; biomedical; biotechnology; bioanalytical. This informative session will take place during Pittcon on Monday, 3 March at McCormick Place.

The 2014 Short Course program will run from 1 - 6 March. Short Courses are taught by industry experts and range from half-day up to two-day classes including beginner, intermediate, and advanced level curricula.

This year, 51 new courses were added in the fields of nanotechnology, pharmaceutical science, data analysis, chromatography, lab management and analytical methods.

In addition to courses in specific disciplines, lab management courses are a significant part of the program covering topics such

as communications, time management, lab safety and best practices that provide critical insight into the interpretation of the requirements of regulatory aspects, global guidelines and laboratory standards. New this year is a free short course, Lab Manager Bootcamp: Insights into Ethical Leadership, which will help participants gain a clearer understanding of ethics, show how ethics are a key ingredient in business and personal success and will provide practical ideas to help with difficult decisions.

Conferee Networking sessions are free to all registered attendees and provide an informal venue for a small group of 15 to 25 participants to openly discuss topics of mutual interest or solve problems specific to certain instrumentation or procedures.

This year, there are 31 facilitated sessions during Conference week covering topics in life science, chromatography, environmental science, fuel, analytical methods, lab procedures, quality control and more. These unique networking opportunities begin on Sunday, run through Wednesday afternoon and are open to all registered conferees at no extra cost. The informal two-hour sessions bring attendees with similar interests together to discuss, resolve problems and brainstorm new concepts.

In keeping with the trend of increased social media use at Pittcon, conferees with mobile devices have access to the official Pittcon 2014 Mobile App which is available for free download in the App Store and Android Market or directly from pittcon.org. The app serves as an all-in-one event guide containing all the information and details about the exposition, program and short courses, as well as a valuable networking tool to use before, during, and after the event. Features include the ability to create a custom agenda, receive reminders and updates, search, filter, and find, take notes and send by email, zand exchange contact information.

Over the following pages we take a look at a selection of the exhibitors and products that will be on display this year. For further information on the show and a full list of exhibitors go to www.pittcon.org International Labmate look forward to welcoming you to booth 1439 at Pittcon 2014.
