66 Customised System Helps Surface Finishing Centre Monitor Process Baths

Lufthansa Technik AG is one of the world’s largest providers of repair and maintenance services for airplane parts and components. At their facility centre for surface fi nishing in Hamburg, Germany, they operate a customised Metrohm ProcessLab system to monitor 70 different process baths.

Connecting Global Competence

Welcome to your success laboratory.

Instrumental Analysis l Laboratory Technology Biotechnology l analytica Conference

Approximately 40.000 repair jobs p.a. are handled by Lufhansa Technik AG‘s centre for surface fi nishing in Hamburg, which is one of the largest facilities of its kind in Europe. Dr Carsten Thoene is in charge of the process baths. Together with his team he monitors 140 analytical parameters complying with 38 offi cial guidelines.

To cope with the huge amount of samples and the many different analytical parameters, Lufthansa Technik AG decided to install a fully automated Metrohm ProcessLab in the same building where the process baths are operated. The major benefi t of this at-line multi-parameter measuring system are evident: Samples don’t need to be shipped to an off-site laboratory but can be analysed onsite enabling the process baths to be operated with maximum effi ciency.

The versatility of the Metrohm ProcessLab is another key-benefi t. The system is entirely modular by design and can be extended at any time. “Our processes are continuously developed and optimised further,” said Dr Thoene. “That’s why our ProcessLab system has to be highly fl exible. In fact, integrating new methods is very easy. Ultimately, this helps us to reduce costs per analysis signifi cantly.”

Dr Thoene benefi ts from the professional service and support he gets from Metrohm Germany, who have a local offi ce in Hamburg.

The Lauda Microcool circulation chillers are suitable for temperature control tasks up to -10°C. The operating element with a large LED display and membrane keyboard enables clear and simple menu guidance. The autostart timer integrated into the software and the auto-shut-down function allow time- controlled switching on and off of the devices. An RS-232 interface and an alarm contact are integrated as standard. The compact design with low standing space saves valuable laboratory space. The high quality block pump with magnetic coupling is unusual in this price category of circulation chillers. The magnetic coupling of the pump and electric motor rules out sealing problems on the pump shaft. Simple removal of the ventilation grille without tools allows easy cleaning of the condenser. The MC 200 and MC 300 devices operate with a maximum pressure of 0.35 bar. The maximum fl ow rate is 14 l/min. The size allows both circulation chillers to be used as desktop units. The three fl oor standing units MC 600, MC 1200 and MC 1200 W in the Lauda Microcool equipment line have cooling performances of 0.6 and 1.2 kW. The circulation chillers have a pump with a maximum pressure of 1.2 bar and a maximum fl ow rate of 27 l/min. The most powerful model is available as an air-cooled or water-cooled version.

Circulation chillers are an important part of many applications in the laboratory. The new Microcool circulation chillers are able to cover most of these basic applications. These applications include, for example, the cooling of rotation evaporators and distiller systems, the cooling of analytical instruments, the cooling water supply in laboratories or the supply of cooling traps. Lauda Microcool together with the Lauda Variocool and Lauda Ultracool equipment lines forms a comprehensive circulation chiller portfolio.
