Range of Low-Retention tips Developed Specifi cally for Life Science Researchers
SSI has launched a new comprehensive family of pipette tips designed to provide researchers with the highest level of liquid handling performance.
The Vertex™ Pipette Tips were developed following extensive research to provide users with a high degree of fluid confidence and control while pipetting. SSI internal studies have indicated their tips provide less fluid retention and less sample loss. All Vertex tips are manufactured using SSI’s specially formulated NoStick® resin. Through use of this resin, the inner surface of the tip is considerably more hydrophobic than standard industry tips enabling viscous fluids in particular to be dispensed more completely. The finely tapered tip construction and thinner walls eliminate the need for users to touch off their pipettor.
Researchers maintain more pipetting control in general, but especially when working with smaller volumes. SSI has produced a short video detailing their new Vertex™ Pipette Tips. It can be found on their microsite.
The new range of tips includes bulk, racked, sterile, and EcoPac® (refill insert) options. They are producing Unfiltered and filtered varieties in 10µl, 10µlXL, 200µl, 300µl, 1mL and 1250µl sizes.
The Vertex line includes a time-saving EcoPac® Refill System. The new system does not require any tools or special instructions to enable users to move from an empty insert to a fresh set of 96 tips. The Vertex racks were uniquely designed for one-hand operation. A simple press on the front of the lid releases it from the rack; otherwise the lid sits securely closed. The EcoPac refills provide over a 70% savings in total materials (including products and packaging).

Air Displacement Pipettor Proves Ideal for new Microbiology Application
The ease of integration of Tecan’s Cavro® Air Displacement Pipettor (ADP) has helped French microbiological instrument manufacturer i2a to develop PRELUD®, an automated pre- analytical instrument for the inoculation of culture plates and preparation of agar susceptibility tests. Project manager Michel Roch explained: “When we were developing PRELUD, the integration of a liquid handling system for streaking Petri dishes was essential. Instead of trying to develop our own liquid handling system, it made sense to obtain this type of OEM component from a company with a good reputation that is an expert in the field, since these components have already been evaluated and certified, with proven accuracy.”
“We needed something very light and easy to use, and that was capable of pipetting liquid volumes ranging from microlitres to millilitres. The Cavro ADP was easy to integrate because it operates mechanically without the use of liquids, and it allows precision liquid dispensing. The tip ejector was another highly useful function; we use Tecan’s disposable tips and simply change between 10 µl, 200 µl and 1 ml tips according to our needs. We were able to integrate the Cavro ADP into PRELUD very quickly and, within two days, we could handle liquids. The reproducibility, precision and accuracy of the Cavro ADP is good enough for our microbiology application without the need for any further tests or trials. We are very satisfied with our collaboration with Tecan.”
