Cleaned up Purifi cation Waters’ robust purifi cation solutions are fl exible, scalable, and easily integrated. From high-throughput fraction collection of hundreds of samples, to purifying just a handful of samples a day, Waters enhances the speed and reliability of your lab’s workfl ow.

Discover the signifi cant benefi ts of having multiple Waters instruments in your lab. Each of our three techniques for purifying samples (SFE, SFC, and LC) can complement the others, and this orthogonal perspective gained by purifying with more than one technique allows for greater ability to discover and identify compounds in a sample.

It’s easy to take a process that’s so common for granted – but we don’t. Discover more at www.waters.com/prep.

Agilent Technologies Receive Recognition Award

Agilent Technologies announced it has been named Frost & Sullivan’s 2013 Laboratory Analytical Instrumentation Company of the Year in China, based on the findings of its Best Practices Research. The company was recognised for demonstrating consistent excellence in growth strategy and implementation, technological innovation, customer value and market penetration in the Chinese laboratory analytical instrumentation industry.

“China’s analytical instrumentation industry is becoming more and more competitive, with increased demand from the food, environmental, pharmaceutical, academic and government research markets,” said Leo Jia, Industry Analyst for Frost & Sullivan. “Our research shows that Agilent continues to perform well and has maintained its position as the industry leader in China for several years, and we expect it to dominate the market throughout the forecast period with its strong position in the GC, HPLC, and MS market segments.”

As the company’s global hub for laboratory instrument research and development, Agilent China is also home to 21 local offices, four manufacturing facilities and four customer- training centres. Operations are managed by a team of 1,800 employees who provide customised products and services to government, university and industry laboratories.

“Having served laboratory researchers and scientists in China for more than 30 years, we are very pleased to earn this award as it reflects upon the strength of our team in China and our commitment to customers,” said Mike McMullen, President of Agilent’s Chemical Analysis Group.

“China has always been a critical market for our life sciences group and we will continue to invest in infrastructure and people to further optimise our product portfolio to provide customers with the best analytical solutions,” said Nick Roelofs, President of Agilent’s Life Sciences Group.

Immutep and Eddingpharm Sign Agreement for Development of Cancer Therapies

Immutep SA, a biopharmaceutical company specialising in immuno-oncology, and Eddingpharm have entered into an agreement regarding the development, commercialisation and manufacturing of Immutep’s ImmuFact®

presentation to T cells. IMP321 (a first-in-class APC activator) can be used in combination with first-line chemotherapy or in combination with checkpoint inhibitors.

IMP321. Financial details

were undisclosed but include milestone payments and royalties. Burrill Securities acted as financial advisor on this transaction.

The agreement grants Eddingpharm rights to develop and market IMP321 in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Immutep will provide full technical support for the development of the product. Immutep and Eddingpharm plan to develop the product for first-line metastatic breast cancer as well as other first-line metastatic indications.

Like the checkpoint inhibitors that induce tumor regression and extend survival, antigen presenting cell (APC) activators increase the T cell response against tumours by a different but complementary mechanism, which enhances antigen

"We have been very impressed by the dynamic and innovative approach of Eddingpharm, and believe them to have the capability of driving the development of IMP321 in China,” said John Hawken, CEO. “Immutep is continuing the development of IMP321 in Europe and the USA. We are in partnering discussions at present.”

“We are excited to be entering the new field of immuno- oncology. We believe that immuno-oncology will revolutionise cancer treatment," said Xin Ni, chairman and chief executive officer of Eddingpharm. "Our priority is bringing new and effective treatments to patients. We look forward to working closely with Immutep to develop IMP321 in first-line metastatic breast cancer as well as other first-line metastatic indications.”

As part of its strategic investments programme to grow the global popularity of its Mosaic sample management product, Titian Software has recently granted exclusive distribution rights to LBD Life Sciences in China, to provide a more accessible support service for Chinese customers. Based in Shanghai, a dedicated Application Support Specialist with advanced technical and operational knowledge of Mosaic will be on-hand, providing new and existing users with a local contact for readily available help and expertise.

Titian continues its expansion in the Far East, and last year saw the integration of Mosaic software into three major Chinese research institutions and commercial R&D facilities, with further sites under discussion. The new distributorship agreement allows

LBD Life Sciences China to respond to the growing demand for an efficient sample management set-up, and explore further opportunities for Mosaic with Chinese customers.

Edmund Wilson, Titian’s CEO, said: “Mosaic has been designed to provide comprehensive and reliable sample management for sites worldwide. In the US and Europe it has been established as the de facto standard in sample management for several years and its increasing uptake in Asia - and especially China - is proof of its impact and suitability for global operations. We are keen to further expand the reach of Mosaic, and our new agreement with LBD Life Sciences will allow us to give our Chinese customers the same level of support as that enjoyed by our customers in other regions.”

GE Healthcare Life Sciences is to provide a KUBio™ modular biopharmaceutical factory for JHL Biotech in China. Expected to be fully operational early 2015 the unit will be located at the Biolake Science Park in Wuhan.

KUBio provides customers with a fully functional, ready-to-run bioprocessing facility in 14-18 months, significantly shorter than construction of a traditional facility. Pre-designed to meet cGMP requirements, pre-made modules come equipped with technologies for the start-to-finish manufacture of biopharmaceuticals.

Members of GE’s experienced Shanghai Fast Trak team will also be deployed to validate the equipment and provide training for JHL Biotech staff. After completion, the JHL Biotech KUBio facility will have a floor space of approximately 2,400m2

and will contain a number of 2,000L single-use bioreactors.

Olivier Loeillot, General Manager of Enterprise Solutions, GE Healthcare Life Sciences (pictured), said, “The decision of JHL Biotech’s highly experienced team to select KUBio as the basis of its commercial cGMP biopharmaceutical manufacturing capabilities in China is a fantastic endorsement of our complete, turnkey approach.
