Versatile Grinder Homogenises Small Sample Volumes


Retsch’s new Mixer Mill MM 400 is the ideal tool for fast and efficient homogenisation of small sample volumes in the laboratory. It processes a great variety of materials such as tablets, minerals, bones, tissues, soils and plastics and achieves grind sizes down to 5 microns.


The MM 400 features two grinding stations and allows for the preparation of up to 20 samples simultaneously. A classic field of application is reproducible dry grinding, such as, for sample preparation for subsequent XRF analysis. Thanks to screw-top, leak-proof grinding jars, wet grinding can be carried out in the MM 400 with 100% material recovery. The mill is also suitable for grinding temperature-sensitive samples which have been pre-embrittled with liquid nitrogen. The wide range of accessories for the MM 400 includes grinding jars in various sizes and materials, as well as adapter racks which can be equipped with 5 or 10 reaction vials. These are used for the disruption of cells and plant and animal tissue.


Benefits include: short grinding times and two grinding stations for high sample throughput; grinding jars available from 1.5ml to 50 ml in 6 different materials; grind size: 5 µm (depending on material); 9 parameter combinations can be stored; reproducible results thanks to digital setting of grinding time and vibration intensity.

Newly Launched Microplate Provides a Unique Sample Preparation Tool for LC-MS


Tecan’s (Switzerland) newly launched AC Extraction Plate is a revolutionary, automation-friendly solution designed to streamline sample preparation for LC-MS analysis of small molecules. The plate, which is based on proprietary TICE (Tecan Immobilized Coating Extraction) technology, reduces the sample preparation process to a convenient ‘pipette and shake’ routine.


The AC Extraction Plate is a 96-position, deep-well microplate, with the inner surface of each well coated with a highly controlled layer of TICE material. This coating efficiently extracts low molecular weight analytes – such as vitamin D and testosterone – from aqueous solutions, eliminating the need for the laborious and time- consuming filtration, centrifugation and evaporation steps that are often integral to other methods. Unlike many of these techniques, sample preparation with the AC Extraction Plate can also be easily automated, providing a rapid, walkaway solution for the extraction of small molecules from biological fluids for LC-MS analysis.

Multi-Experiment Workstation Provides Big Workload Combined with Small Footprint


How many laboratories are short of space because of lots of individual set-ups – stirring hotplates, water baths and heating mantles, each requiring their own electrics, gas and cooling water supply?


The innovative StarFishTM from Radleys, really is a space and cost saver. Using existing laboratory stirring hotplates and glassware, its small footprint can be configured to perform complex procedures in parallel, including synthesis, extraction, concentration and distillation, really improving productivity.


Laboratory Manager, Alan Hague, from the School of Life Sciences at the University of Bradford has invested in multiple StarFish systems for use in the Chemical and Forensic Sciences teaching labs.
