New Automated Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) Instruments Launched to Help Improve Clinical Performance
BD Diagnostics, a segment of BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company), have introduced two new erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) instruments in Europe that standardise analysis for more accurate, timely results and an efficient workflow in comparison to a manual Westergren method. This next generation of BD ESR instruments results in improved patient care in the laboratory or point of care setting. Erythrocyte sedimentation is a commonly used haematology test to measure inflammation and the presence and severity of disease. “Improved automation and efficiency are key to carrying out analytical tests in a busy laboratory. More and more tests are being conducted each year and reduced healthcare spending puts pressure on laboratory resources,” commented Stephen Church, European Medical Affairs, BD Diagnostics -Preanalytical Systems.
Manual ESR testing has the potential for errors during the analytical process. The new BD Sedi-20 and BD Sedi-40 combined with BD Seditainer™ tube technology, standardise analysis to improve accuracy. The BD Sedi-40 has an integrated barcode reader and tube mixer. The barcode reader ensures fast, accurate entry of sample identification information. Sample misidentification is one of the many errors which can occur during the preanalytical phase. The integrated mixer ensures consistent and standardised mixing of the sample, which is critical in order to obtain an accurate result. Moving from an open manual process to an automated closed process will improve healthcare worker safety by reducing the risk of exposure to blood-borne pathogens. With an analysis time of just 30 minutes, a 50% reduction in time to result is achieved compared to the gold standard of one hour with Westergren. BD Sedi-20 can perform 20 tests an hour and the BD Sedi-40 can perform 40 tests an hour. The BD Sedi-40 can be connected to a laboratory information system to enable automatic uploading of results.

Software a Significant Factor in Choice of Laser Diffraction Particle Size Analyser for Commercial Materials Testing Laboratory
CryoFreeze® – Range of Tubes,
Racks and Accessories for use in Cryogenic Preparation and Storage SSI, an American manufacturer of
consumable plastics for laboratory researchers for over 23 years, has launched a comprehensive family of cryogenic storage products designed to provide researchers with consumables needed in the cryopreservation of tissue and cells.
A refreshingly modern and inviting operating environment led independent, commercial materials testing laboratory NSL Analytical Services, straight to the Mastersizer 3000 from Malvern Instruments when it came to choosing a laser diffraction particle size analyser to extend testing capabilities.
“The software really is the shining star of this product,” said Brian Bacher, Technical Specialist at NSL. “It makes the Mastersizer 3000 feel radically different from other systems on the market and a really great instrument to use. I especially like the live trends which make it so quick and easy to compare data sets,” he continued.
“Our customers need particle size and particle size distribution data to optimise their products and the processes used to manufacture them,” continued Mr Bacher. “We made the decision to invest in our own laser diffraction particle size analyser to ensure fast and efficient turnaround in the face of growing demand. Throughout the research and purchasing process, we assessed at least five to six different systems before selecting the Mastersizer 3000,” he concluded.
The Mastersizer 3000 was the newest laser diffraction system assessed by the NSL Analytical Services team, a factor that was most evident from the software interface. With a small footprint and dynamic range of 0.01 to 3500 microns it efficiently delivers precise and robust wet and dry particle sizing for the broadest selection of sample types. The innovative software was designed from the outset to ease the analytical burden and ensure that users of all levels could achieve reliable measurement. It includes features that inform method development and transfer as well as making it straightforward to verify measurement stability in real time.
Added Bacher, “Malvern came recommended by colleagues in the industry but it was the features of the Mastersizer 3000 itself that sold us on the instrument. It enables us to meet our customers’ needs for particle size information in an efficient way and has met our high expectations. We’ve been running for a year now without any reliability issues and with minimal running costs. Most importantly we produce data that can be trusted.”

The CryoFreeze® family of cryogenic tubes, racks, and accessories was created to provide users with safe and handy solutions for the cryogenic transportation and storage of biological material.
The CF Tubes are comprised of FDA-approved, medical grade polypropylene tubes and HDPE caps. Additionally, the tubes comply with the In Vitro Devices Directive (IVD). Tubes are packaged in resealable stand-up pouches that minimise the use of benchtop space. Contrasting black 100µL graduations on the tubes are easy to view, and researchers have found the prominent writing area to be very useful.
SSI offers internally threaded caps that maximise tube storage within racks and boxes, and also externally threaded caps which are ideal for aseptic technique, as they reduce the risk of cross-contamination. Sizes of the CryoFreeze® tubes range from 1.0 mL up to 4.5mL. Tubes are offered with self-standing stargrip bases or a round bottom design.
To round out the CF cryogenic portfolio of products, SSI offers colored cap inserts, polycarbonate storage racks and a unique workstation.
The CryoFreeze
polycarbonate storage racks are offered in 5 colors, and produced in 25, 81 and 100-well configurations. The CryoFreeze GripRack™ is a ruggedly designed 40-well workstation. It features rubber no-slip grips on the base to hold securely
on the benchtop. Ribs inside the wells of the rack enable tubes with stargrip bases to be easily opened or closed with one hand. An easy to read alphanumeric index on the rack makes for rapid sample identification.
Since 1990 SSI has been developing and producing innovations for life science at their California home office. They operate under an ISO9001 certified Quality Assurance process and deploy state of the art fully automated manufacturing. SSI consumable products are sold through laboratory supply distributors worldwide.
