A Level SOCIOLOGY Overview of subject:


Sociology attempts to understand and explain how societies and groups operate and change, how groups influence the individual, how meanings and interpretations “construct reality” and how social life is influenced by the unintended consequences of human action. In A Level Sociology, students learn to develop a sociological imagination through examining society from a variety of perspectives that focus on social change, social order and meaning.


Exam board and specification number: AQA / 7192 Course outline:


Students will be investigate a variety of sociological perspectives including: Marxism, Feminism and Functionalism and how these perspectives apply to aspects of society.


Modules include: education, family, research methods, beliefs in society, crime and deviance and theory and methods.


3 exams, 2 hours each. Why choose the subject?


Many sociology students go on to take degrees in sociology or a related fields such as anthropology, criminology or education. Common career pathways taken by sociology graduates include journalism, law, PR, marketing, social research, politics, charities, development work, teaching, social work and nursing. It is also a useful subject for those not wanting to follow careers such as the police, armed forces, civil service and working with children or the elderly.
