Additional studies and experience

Being a Sixth Form student at Matravers is not just about studying the core curriculum of A Levels or Vocational subjects. We provide a range of other opportunities for learning and personal development in order to help students prepare for life and the demands of Higher Education.

Students follow a tutor programme devised to help them make the transition to independent study and adult life.

This includes: • Developing Personal Competencies, Study and Revision Skills;

• Academic Writing; • Citizenship, Current Affairs, Political and Social Issues; • Personal Development.

Careers and Higher Education guidance is provided, starting in the second term of Year 12, with guidance and monitoring by tutors. Students begin their research into available courses and opportunities, so that they are ready to submit UCAS or other applications at an early stage in Year 13. They will also visit universities and attend the UCAS higher education conference held annually at a local university. Furthermore, we have an Oxbridge programme

Matravers School Sixth Form Prospectus

for students capable of the highest A Level grades.

Students have the opportunity to experience links with business and industry through work experience placements in Year 12.

All students take part in Community Action through School Service, although many students go above and beyond this expectation through their own initiative. This may involve providing learning support for younger students at Matravers, at local primary schools, or working with those in need in the wider community. Students are also expected to organise their own fund-raising activities for charity. Recently we have built close links with the National Citizenship Service with a growing number of our students successfully completing the programme.
