A Level PHILOSOPHY AND ETHICS Overview of subject:


A Level Philosophy and Ethics is a broad essay based subject, which gives students a range of knowledge and understanding of many philosophical concepts, key thinkers, themes, texts and ways of thinking. It also draws light on key ethical issues, which remain incredibly important to this day. The course provides a critical approach to the consideration of moral and philosophical issues.

Course outline: Philosophy: (33.3%, 2 hrs) Study of ancient philosophical influences such as Plato and Aristotle and debating the existence of God. Ethics: (33.3%, 2 hrs) Study of how people come to make decisions on a whole range of issues such as sexual behaviour, marriage and divorce, war and peace. Religious Thought: (33.3%, 2hrs) Exploration of the place and role of religion in the modern secular world.

Philosophy and Ethics is the original ‘academic’ subject. It is a highly respected discipline that is valued by universities. Many students go on to apply their philosophical skills in jobs as diverse as the law, computer programming, management consultancy, film-making, journalism, medicine, and all areas in which clarity of thought and expression are essential.
