A Level ENGLISH LITERATURE


Overview of subject: A Level English Literature requires students to have a love of reading across a range of genres and an ability to research and read around the texts and topics studied. An independent and exploratory approach to study and an ability to read and write analytically is highly advantageous.


Exam board and specification number: AQA / 7712


Course Outline: Paper 1: Love through the Ages. Study of at least three set texts including a Shakespeare play and a Pre-1900 and post-1900 novel. There is also an anthology of poetry.


Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts. Study of Modern Times: Literature 1945 to present day. This will comprise the study of a prose text, a drama and an anthology of poetry. Unseen texts will also be examined.


NEA: 20% of the final marks are based upon a coursework essay comparing texts across time.


What goes well with your subject? English Literature is a very well regarded qualification and embeds many discursive and analytical skills needed across a range of subjects. It broadens horizons, encourages empathy and enriches a students’ understanding of a variety of ideas and contexts as well as engendering a love of language.
