COMMENT
THE LAST WORD
ROB MAYO, Chamber President, on the issues that are worth talking about
BREXIT AND TRADE CONFERENCE I don’t think anyone could accuse the Chamber’s upcoming Brexit and Trade Conference of being untimely. As Brexit negotiations move closer towards a
crescendo – with the date for leaving the European Union now a matter of months away – there appears to be as much, if not more, uncertainty now than at any stage in the negotiations. One thing that is certain is that uncertainty is
not good for business. Businesses need to be confident that they can both work their way through challenges resulting from Brexit but, just as importantly, are well placed to capitalise on future opportunities. The Brexit and Trade Conference on 22
CHAMBER BUSINESS AWARDS What a fantastic celebration of Chamber members the past month has been. I was both privileged and honoured to address
guests at all three gala dinners in Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire throughout September and doing so certainly ranks up there as one of the highlights of my tenure as President of the Chamber. There are few things more inspiring than
seeing many of our region’s finest businesses – of all shapes and sizes – coming together under one roof to celebrate business in the region and to reward some of our most innovative, ambitious companies. My congratulations go out to all the finalists
and, of course, the winners of each category for their much-deserved success. Congratulations also go to the four organisations – trentbarton, Tidyco, Shirebrook Academy and Dalycom – which have all gone on to win regional BCC awards on the back of their Chamber success. Running a successful business is hard work
and we live in very unpredictable times. This makes it even more important that we, as a Chamber and as a business community, take the time to step back and both acknowledge and celebrate the fantastic businesses we have here in the East Midlands.
82 business network October 2018 As the only awards in the region that are
delivered by business, for business, the Chamber Business Awards do just that. My sincere thanks also go to all the sponsors
that have shown their support in 2018. Without such support, the Business Awards and gala dinners simply could not take place. Your role in ensuring the Chamber Business Awards are the success they are cannot be understated. My thanks also goes to the dedicated,
talented employees of the Chamber who work throughout the year to make sure the Business Awards a success.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING I can hardly believe a year has nearly gone by since the 2017 AGM, which saw me take on the presidential reins from my predecessor, Geoff Poyzer. The 2018 AGM takes place on Wednesday 7
November at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, and offers an excellent opportunity for members to come together and network and also speak with the Chamber’s senior leadership team and learn more about Chamber activity, both now and in the future. This event is for members only and is free to
attend. You can register by visiting the Events section of the website or by emailing
events@emc-dnl.co.uk.
October in Nottingham brings together some superb speakers and presenters and is an unmissable opportunity for members to receive the most up-to-date information on Brexit and the international trade landscape, so that they can be best prepared in the months and years to come.
PARTY CONFERENCE SEASON The past few weeks have seen all the main political parties host their annual conferences and as expected – against the backdrop of Brexit negotiations – there has been a lot of noise and, at times, division, from parties of every political colour and persuasion. What must not be lost in this noise is the need
to create an environment here in the UK that is conducive to business. Whether we look at short-term issues or a
long-term vision for the country, key to the success and future prosperity of both the East Midlands and the United Kingdom as a whole is giving businesses confidence that they will be given the environment and assistance to develop, grow, employ more people and sell more things domestically and across the globe. I would urge the country’s politicians to put
business at the front of their minds as we enter a very busy political time. It should never be forgotten that it is business that is the creator of wealth and it is business that will play a fundamental role in the future prosperity of the UK.
