‘Companies wishing to export directly to Vietnam should have a local representative acting as an importer/distributor’

English language training and school equipment are all areas where East Midlands businesses can get involved. There are potential challenges to

doing business in Vietnam too. There is a high level of corruption and bureaucracy, coupled with a low-skilled workforce and challenging infrastructure. The language barrier also means that translators and interpreters are often required. Companies wishing to export

directly to Vietnam should have a local representative acting as an importer/distributor. Getting information in Vietnam can be difficult, so it’s important to develop personal relationships and, if possible, visit the market to understand how it operates.

Although Intellectual Property

(IP) regulations are in place they are not strongly enforced, so it is also advisable to protect your IP before operating in Vietnam. While business etiquette is

similar to the UK, there are a few cultural differences to bear in mind, such as presenting business cards with two hands and addressing people formally. It is also worth remembering that smiles and nods do not necessarily mean “yes”. If you are a business looking to

Vietnam as a potential new market, you can contact the Enterprise Europe Network, which will be able to support you.
