STRATEGIC PARTNERS AND PATRONS

Putting a spring in the step of business leaders

If someone asked you how much fuel you had in your proverbial tank how would you respond? If they are honest, most business

leaders would answer 7/10 at best. If they have not had a holiday in a while, they could be as low as 3/10. So, how do they become

energised enough to reach the dizzy heights of a nine or dare they even hope for a ten? In a survey by The Alternative

Board (TAB), 76% of business owners said their lack of get-up- and-go has led to impatience, insomnia, forgetfulness, mood swings, restlessness, boredom and temper outbursts or a combination of some or all. The drain on natural energy is

often prompted by long hours and work-related stress. These often have a knock-on effect on home life which, instead of being a relief from work, can multiply tensions. The obvious answer to workplace stress is delegation. However,

business owners will know that is easier said than done. In the TAB survey, only three per

cent said they avoided delegation because they did not trust a staff member to do the job. The main reasons for not

distributing jobs were that they felt they were the most capable option, that their employees did not have the right skills or that they simply liked carrying out the tasks. Time is always tight but

identifying tasks which can be delegated or outsourced will be of considerable benefit to a business and its leader. This will enable time to recharge batteries and allows time for creating strategies. Owners may worry they are indispensable to the day-to-day or even minute-to-minute activity of their firm. However, many are at real risk of making themselves vulnerable to nervous breakdowns, strokes or heart attacks. The Alternative Board Derby, one

of the Chamber’s newest patrons, keeps the adage ‘Looking after No. 1’ while advising its members. Therefore, at the beginning of all of its peer boards, it asks members to rate their personal and business fuel tanks. Julian Smith, owner of TAB

Derby, said: “The energy and state of wellbeing of a company’s head is crucial to that of the wider business. If he or she is not feeling zestful, the chances are that the rest of the business could be stalling. “We explore the reasons why

they are not feeling on top of their game and then challenge them to take action to get them back there. “When they rate their fuel tank as a ten, it gives us a real buzz.”

TAB Derby is partnering with the Chamber to deliver a one- off ‘Looking after No. 1’ event, which is free to members. The event, which takes

place at the Derby Conference Centre between 8am and 11am on 11 October, will show delegates how to change their thinking and their life for good – including talks from real business owners who will reveal how they have done just that.

Government Relations and Sales, said: “Congratulations to Boeing for being selected to develop this historic aircraft in support of the US Navy. For Rolls-Royce, it will expand our UAV expertise with unmanned aircraft in the US Navy fleet, which includes the Triton and Fire Scout aircraft.”
